Countries in Six Of Crows

The countries are Kerch, Fjerda, Shu Han, Wandering Isles, Kenst Hjerte, Eames Chin, Novyi Zem and the Southern Colonies. Kerch is where most of the worlds economy is centered at, and Kerch gets most of the products it needs from Novyi Zem, as do many other countries. This is because of Novy Zem’s rich soil soil and good weather. Ravka and Fjerda don’t get along since there are a lot of grisha in Ravka and the people in Fjerda view grisha as abominations. In Shu Han people are very curious, hence leading to many discoveries. Shu Han isn’t repulsed by grisha like Fjerdians, they are fascinated by them. However they still view grisha as ‘less than human’. The Southern Colonies are kind of like Novyi Zem. The Wandering Isles is where most work labour comes from. Kenst Hjerte and Eames Chin are pretty much anonymous.

Ketterdam

Ketterdam, a bustling hub of trade, where anything is possible for the right prize. Ketterdam is the capital of Kerch, that’s a small island country. Despite it’s small size Kerch is the center point of the world’s economy. Ketterdam may seem like a respectable city however thinking this will be your ruin. Ketterdam is full of thugs, canal rats, thieves, con artists, gang bosses, mercenaries, and merchants. Also if you do find yourself in a tough situation don’t expect pity, in Ketterdam the only Law is profit. Those who are rich and/or have power are the ones who hold all the cards. If you want to win and survive then get stronger, get tougher or get out. The Kerch love money, they’ll do anything for that. If you find yourself in a situation where you just happen to meet a person who just happens to have a deal that seems to be to good to be true, it’s probably not. You’re probably being conned, don’t fall for it. If you do get conned then the authorities will be no help, since you took the shortcut. Of course if you have proof that you were conned then everyone is going to go crazy. Since a broken contract is the highest crime possible in Kerch, the punishment is the same as murder. This crime is considered a blight no abomination on the name of Ghezen (god of commerce and trade, the most respected god in Kerch). Ketterdam is wet and crowded. The houses haven’t got a good foundation so they lean on each other. When people travel Ketterdam they wear costumes from the Komedie Brute (a Kerch play). They usually where the costumes at West Stave, because that’s where the pleasure houses are. Then of course there’s the Barrel, where most of the gambling dens are, as well as where the gangs of Ketterdam are holing up at. The people that are fresh out of a boat and in awe of Ketterdam are the first targets (also known a pigeons in Barrel slang) of con artist who are usually a part of a gang. The Merchant council are the 13 oldest and richest families in Ketterdam, they control most trade in Kerch, at least that’s what they like to think. In reality it’s the gangs that control trade. The council of tides control the currents around Kerch, they make sure Kerch doesn’t flood and that ships arrive safely in the harbour. They have watchtowers all over Ketterdam, however nobody knows their identities. Needless to say you have to be though and smart if you want to survive let alone thrive in Ketterdam.

Jurda Parem

Jurda Parem is a more concentrated version of the Jurda plant. It increases a grisha’s power to impossible heights. Things that just shouldn’t be possible, do. With this drug grisha can become slaves or an unstoppable force. While Jurda is a plant grown in Novi Zem it’s a stimulant and practically harmless. However Jurda Parem is most definitely not harmless. It was made by a Shu scientist Bo Yul-Bayur. Jurda Parem is being used on grisha and it turns them into slaves with great power. The grisha that the drug is used on become powerful, however they become addicted to the drug. They can think of nothing but how to get the next dose of the drug, this prevents them from harming the person who gives them the drug. That’s why the scientist named it Parem, it ‘means without mercy’.

Matthias Helvar

Matthias Helvar is a former druskelle ( Grisha hunter ). He is in Hellgate at the beginning, but Kaz breaks him out with Inej, Nina, and Jesper. He values honour over all else. At the beginning he loathes Nina, since she got him thrown in Hellgate. Kaz being Kaz gives him a chance to become a druskelle again if he helps them. Of course this means betraying his country. You got to feel bad for the guy though, as well as anyone else who met Kaz Brekker.

Nina Zenik is a Grisha, a Heartrender to be precise. She can control peoples heartbeat, maybe their emotions, and she can change their faces, This is her power. She came to Ketterdam as a lost 16 year old girl. She was going to join Pekka Rollins but Kaz sent Inej to Nina to talk her out of it and convince her to join them. Inej succeeded and turns out Nina made the right choice, since a girl died the next day at the place she was going to work at. She really likes Inej but hates Kaz.

Inej Ghafa

Inej Ghafa is Kaz Brekker’s spider. A spider is a person who moves undetected and gathers secrets. Her nickname is the Wraith. At first she didn’t like it, she told Kaz that it made her feel like she’s a ghost. He said she is a phantom, she needs a name that will strike fear into the hearts of her enemies. Many people who know Inej respect her bravery. She is in debt to the Dregs general, Per Haskell. Although it was Kaz who convinced him to pay off a fake indenture Inej was caught up in. She isn’t like Kaz. She’s actually a really kind person and doesn’t like to do crime. She always does penance every time she sins.
